CD Studio Installation
The following procedure is from the manual, "Using
CD Studio with UNIX Systems."
- Set the SCSI ID of the studio to 5 (default factory settings),
switches 1 and 3 on, the rest of them off.
- Set the SCSI ID of the recorder to 6 (factory default). It doesn't
matter that you already have a device at ID 6, because the recorder
and your internal CD-ROM are on different SCSI chains. (If your
recorder is internal to the studio, you need not set the SCSI
ID of the recorder. In fact, you can't. It's been taken care of
for you.)
- Connect the studio to your server by attaching one end of the
cable to your server's SCSI port, and the other end to the Studio
where the port is labeled "HOST." There are actually
two Centronix connectors there, side by side, which are electrically
the same. It doesn't matter which one you use.
- Place a Centronix terminator in the other unused "HOST"
port.
- If your writer is internal to the CD Studio, you can skip this
step. Attach the recorder to the studio with one end of the SCSI
cable in either one of the SCSI pors on the back of the writer,
the other end of the cable to the back of the Studio, in the port
labeled "WRITER."
- If your recorder is internal to the CD Studio, you can skip
this step. If you purchased your external recorder from us (you
can determine this if there is a clear plastic strip on the back
of the recorder with the letter "F" followed by several
numbers, like this: F10000071), DO NOT terminate the writer; it
has been done internally. If our serial number strip is not present,
place a Centronix terminator in the other unused SCSI port in
the back of the recorder. Call YMI if you are unsure about the
ter- mination of your writer.
- Here is where the manual is in error: Power up the Studio first,
making sure before hand that the writer is empty and off. After
you hear the start-up beep from the Studio, wait 45 seconds, THEN
turn on the recorder. You can now boot your server.
- Get to the ok prompt on your server and type probe-scsi -a.
You should see all of your other known SCSI devices, plus two
more entries at target 5. Unit 0 will be an Exabyte 8200 tape
device (the Studio's main emulated device for premastering and
burning CDs). Unit 1 will be a Toshiba CD-ROM reader; this device
is NOT the recorder, which will never be seen by your host if
it is attached to the Studio properly. This reader device is further
Studio emulation, which allows you to mount the Studio's hard
drive as though it was a CD-ROM, once you have a premastered image
dumped to it.
- If you see the above devices, proceed. If not, double-check
steps 1-8. If, after checking the procedure, you are still not
successful, call Young Minds Technical Support at (909) 426-4860.
- At the ok prompt, type boot -rv. This will create the device
nodes for the Studio's tape device in your /dev directory. You
will need to make note of this device for later use. The tape
device should be something like /dev/rmt/0. It is possible that
the device will not be created on the first attempt, requiring
you to repeat this step.
- At this point, installation is complete and you can begin using
CD Studio with MakeDisc to create CDs.

OPTIONAL: If you are configuring your system to run with a
Rimage in-line printer, you will need to make a modification
to /kernel/drv/st.conf. It should look like:

be able to
target=5 lun=2; utilize the Rimage printer)
After this is done, halt your host and do a boot -rv.
