Compact Disc-Recordable
(CD-R) technology is based on the same international standards that
have contributed to the success of CD-ROM. CD-R has become the preferred
storage medium for many applications. CD-R is widely recognized
as offering the lowest cost per megabyte of any random access writable
storage medium. In addition, it is compact, durable, versatile and
can be used to reliably archive data for upwards of 100 years. Further,
because CD-R is a true write-once medium, it provides legal hardcopy
of the information stored.
These capabilities
have made CD-R the data storage medium of choice for many vertical
market applications. Yet no other application area may offer a better
demonstration of the value of CD-R technology than medical imaging.
Young Minds, a pioneer in CD-R technology, continues to lead in
the application of CD-ROM, CD-R, and DVD technologies in medical
imaging and other markets.
As the use of
digital imaging technology has expanded in medical applications,
the amount of data which needs to be collected, analyzed and stored
has also increased. With a capacity of 650 to 700 MB per disc, CD-R
is perfect for image storage, archival, and distribution.
Among CD-R's
advantages over other writable media is the widespread availability
of inexpensive CD-ROM drives to read back discs. Because of the
many benefits provided by CD-R technology, many organizations have
endorsed CD-R for the physical interchange of digital image data,
including:
- The American
College of Cardiology (ACC)
- The American
College of Radiology (ACR)
- National
Electrical Manufacturers Association (NEMA)
These organizations
are continuing to expand the scope of applications for CD-R.
A common exchange
of information between cardiologist and radiologist is a necessity.
Many physicians often send images (x-ray, CAT, MRI, etc.) to other
physicians for consultation and third party insurance review, and
research depends on the analysis of images collected from many clinical
sources.
Since the introduction
of digital imaging to the healthcare industry, many systems are
being installed to replace traditional cine film. CD-R is fast becoming
the emerging technology which will be the true successor to cine
film. CD-R presents many opportunities for storage and distribution.
This enables the healthcare industry to reduce costs while improving
efficiency.
