IBM AIX Adds Calls for CD Studio
Can be used to build Disaster Recovery CD-R Discs
Press Release
Redlands, California, February 29, 2000 - Young Minds, Inc. (YMi)
of Redlands, California and the IBM AIX Install Team (Austin, TX)
announced today that a new command has been added to AIX®
4.3.3 to allow the creation of bootable CDs. CD Studio®
from Young Minds is one of three compatible CD premastering/ recording
packages, and the only complete hardware/software CD recording solution
that works in conjunction with the new ‘mkcd’ command. The ‘mkcd’
command allows users to create bootable AIX install CDs. AIX users
can use this capability to implement a virtual "one button" disaster
recovery tool to reinstall systems after a disk crash or other catastrophic
data loss.
Julie
Craft, AIX Install Architect at IBM in Austin (TX), described the
results of the testing done by the AIX Install Team:
"We tested the new AIX 'mkcd' command to create bootable backup
and install CDs with Young Minds' CD Studio, and found it to be
an excellent match. CD Studio worked seamlessly with our AIX 4.3.3
operating system, and we were very happy with all of our results."
CD
Studio features a unique controller-based design that simplifies
installation, configuration, and operation with Unix-based workstations
and servers, such as IBM RS/6000 systems, by eliminating the need
for custom drivers. The controller-based design also allows network
access. Since the controller isolates the CD recorder from the workstation/server
sending data for recording, it helps ensure that every disc will
be good. CD Studio supports a wide range of CD file system options,
including ISO 9660, Rock Ridge, Joliet, and ISO 9660 with Translation
Tables.
Matthew
Hornbeck, President of Young Minds, had this reaction to IBM’s adding
the ‘mkcd’ command to AIX:
"We are very pleased that IBM has incorporated support for CD
Studio into the latest release of AIX. CD Studio has a well-earned
reputation for reliability, ease of use, and ease of installation.
The fact that IBM has chosen CD Studio as a solution to build
bootable discs underscores its market-leading capabilities."
AIX
4.3.3 is an integrated operating environment that supports both
32- and 64-bit RS/6000® systems in their full range
of scalability while providing improved software features for both
environments. Additional information about AIX 4.3.3 and the "mkcd"
command can be found on IBM’s web site at:
